Hedge Fund Investing by Kevin Mirabile - A Book Retelling Series

So I picked up this book called Hedge Fund Investing: A Practical Approach to Understanding Investor Motivation, Manager Profits, and Fund Performance by Kevin R. Mirabile. And honestly, it’s one of those books that sounds intimidating but actually breaks things down pretty well.

The book was published by Wiley in 2013 (ISBN: 978-1-118-28122-2), and Mirabile brings real experience to it. He’s been a banker, accountant, service provider, investor, and even a partner in a hedge fund. So he’s not just talking theory here.

What This Series Is About

I’m going to go through this book chapter by chapter and retell it in a way that actually makes sense. No finance jargon overload. No pretending you need an MBA to understand how hedge funds work.

Here’s the thing about hedge funds - most people hear the term and think “rich people stuff” or “Wall Street gambling.” And sure, there’s some of that. But there’s also a whole system behind it that’s worth understanding, even if you never invest in one.

What the Book Covers

The book is split into three parts:

Part One - The Basics (Chapters 1-3): What hedge funds actually are, who puts money into them and why, and how the industry has changed over the years.

Part Two - The Strategies (Chapters 4-8): Different ways hedge funds try to make money. Global macro, long/short equity, fixed income, convertible arbitrage, and multi-strategy approaches.

Part Three - Evaluating Funds (Chapters 9-12): How to measure if a hedge fund is actually good, what to look for when picking one, and the people behind the scenes who keep everything running.

Why Bother Reading About Hedge Funds?

Even if you’re not planning to invest in a hedge fund anytime soon, understanding how they work gives you a better picture of how financial markets actually function. These funds move serious money around, and their strategies affect everything from stock prices to interest rates.

Plus, some of the concepts - like risk management, performance measurement, and due diligence - apply to any kind of investing.

The Plan

I’ll be posting one chapter summary per day through the rest of March. Big chapters get split into two parts so nothing gets too heavy.

Here’s the lineup:

Let’s get into it.
